Ammonoids with an extremely wide variety of conch morphologies, ranging from globose and involute forms to thinly discoidal and evolute shapes. Suture line in almost all species with an adventive lobe, phylogenetically beginning with the elements E A L I. Multiple developments toward supplementary lobes (subdivision of the E lobe, secondary A, L, and U lobes, subdivision of the I lobe). Lobes in the early members of the order broadly rounded, becoming acute, denticulate, or digitate during phylogeny. Siphuncle almost always in ventral, only rarely in subventral position.
